Presentation: Writing Groups

Dayna Jean DeFeo & Rebeca Maseda

UAA Center for Alaska Education Policy Research, ISER

Although peer-reviewed publications are perhaps the most important component in academic promotions and grant applications, faculty and researchers are left on their own to do this, often without resources, sufficient support, or information. This isolated aspect of workloads can become oppressive and work against the outcome: scholarly productivity. This presentation briefly reviews the literature on writing groups, focusing on benefits in and outside of academia. The presenters weave the empirical literature with their own experiences of creating and maintaining a successful writing group. The presenters make recommendations for identifying writing needs, and for establishing and maintaining a healthy and productive writing group.
